Facilities - All lab facilities to perform UG & PG practical are available and basic research facility is also available.
Academic and researches achievements - All the faculty members are post graduate, Five are Ph.D., One is M.Phil. and two are NET qualified and pursuing their Ph.D. All the faculty members are engaged in research activities along with taking UG and PG classes. They have published a number of research papers in reputed national and international journals and also published books and books chapters.
Different activities- The department is actively participating in different activities like arranging special lecture on different topics, association of Paryavaran Chhatra Club, Academic tour and environmental awareness programs.
History of the Department
The department was established in the year 1965 as an undergraduate Department and it was upgraded to post graduate department in the year 1969 since then both UG and PG classes are running properly with well qualified teaching faculty. The department had the privilege of having Late Dr. A. K. Saxena as its first head of the department, who is well known for his textbooks for undergraduate classes. His pioneering services for about two decades are unforgettable. We revere him for his foresight, deep knowledge, excellent in teaching and above all his gentleness. The department has the credit for giving this college a Principal, Prof. V. K. Srivastava, who served the college for about sixteen years and retired on June 2003. Presently, Prof. S. P. Singh is working as Head of the Department. The department organized the following activities to enrich the interest of the students in the subject and matters lateral to it.
(i) National Seminar on “Fungal diseases of pulses and oil-seed crops” on Jan.19, 1999.
(ii) National Seminar on “Plants and Human Welfare : Past to present ” on Dec. 24, 2007.
(iii) National Seminar on “Changing Environment : Present scenario and its conservation” on Dec. 01-02, 2011.
(iv) Workshop on Wetland Biodiversity : Restoration and Survival on Nov.17, 2016.
(v) National Conference on “Recent trends & experimental approach for sustainable development and conservation of biodiversity on March 25-27, 2023. Jointly organized by department of Botany and Zoology of D.B.S. College Kanpur.
Teaching staff of the department is well qualified to take up the assignment of teaching and research work. More than twenty scholars have been awarded Ph.D. degree under the guidance of the teaching staff. At present the department has 8 faculty members, out of which one faculty member is Professor, one faculty member is Associate Professor and six faculty members are Assistant Professor. Three faculty members are approved supervisors for research at C.S.J.M. University, Kanpur and three are pursuing for their Ph.D. at C.S.J.M. University, Kanpur. Some students of this department have got placements in different Colleges and Institutions. The department accommodates students belonging to different social economic status and strives to improve their expression both in Hindi and English.
Teachers encourage students in every way and inspire them to read standard text books. Teachers keep consulting text books and journals to update their knowledge. The department have its own rich departmental library supported by central library. The department has a rich botanical garden and museum. Students are always encouraged for trips and field study. They very often visit NBRI, CIMAP, BSIP, BSI, FRI and Nawabganj Birds Sanctuary. Ozone day, Earth day, Health day and Forest day are celebrated every year in the department. The students of the department take part in the awareness programmes like save Ganga and Pandu river a important tributary of Ganga, Kanpur city. The Magsaysay award winner environmentalists Rajendra Singh (Jal Purush) and Dr. Anil Prakash Joshi (Padam Bhushan, Padam Sri, Environmentalists) also kindly visited this department and boosted our morale. Besides above the department also organized Lectures on different topics by Eminent Scientist/ Teachers in different years, during and after the period of Covid-19 the teaching staff of Botany department also started online classes since then the faculty members are teaching in hybrid mode (online/offline). The department also organized online special lecture on sound pollution on 22.01.2022 and on plant tissue culture on 28.01.2022. The department also has an alumni group. The alumni of the department still maintained their interest in our activities and progress.
The department created a paryavaran chhatra club (पर्यावरण छात्र क्लब) in the year 2023. The students of this club are engaged in different social activities/awareness programs like paryavaran jagrukta rally, plantation etc. The department is maintaining a good garden along with medicinal plants and seasonal flowers which easily attract the visitors and trying to establish Nav-grah vatika. Nav-grah vatika having celestial value as its 9 plants represent 9 planets of the Universe. We have a plan to encourage and maintained smart teaching through the best facilities available. For the coming decade the department is now well equipped for a high standard of teaching and research and the students hopefully with bring a good name to us where ever they go.
