The department of physics at D.B.S. College, Kanpur, is one of the renowned academic centers for physics studies in Kanpur. The department provides proper ambiance for physics students aspiring to build their career around physics. An excellent team of competent faculty is involved in teaching and research, supported by some of the state-of-the-art research facilities. The department currently offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses. The students are provided with ample opportunities and exposure to real-time research through projects and academic programs with a specialization in electronics at the PG level. The department has five well-maintained laboratories for undergraduate and postgraduate students, which are upgraded usually every year with the latest equipment. In addition, the department has research labs for students to carry out their project work, play around with the concepts of physics, give shape to their innovative ideas, and exhibit their creative skills. The classrooms and labs of the department are well-equipped to facilitate effective teaching. The department has a well-endowed library with more than 1400 reference books and proper sitting space.
The department has well-qualified and experienced faculty. Presently, the department has sixteen faculty members; out of them, five are professors and eleven are assistant professors. The faculty members of the department have specializations in different areas of Physics, ranging from condensed matter physics, electronics, material science, high energy physics, astronomy and astrophysics etc. Moreover, the department places great emphasis on research along with teaching. Twelve faculty members of the department are registered as Ph.D. supervisor who works in various research areas of theoretical and experimental physics. The research environment in the department is very vibrant. The research interests and expertise of the faculty members span a wide range of topics, including material science, ultrasonics, NMR spectroscopy, liquid crystal, condensed matter physics, environmental physics, high-energy physics, astronomy and astrophysics etc., covering both theoretical and experimental aspects. The faculty members of the department have also been involved in several UGC/DST/CSIR sponsored minor and major research projects. Our faculty publishes number of research papers every year in national and international reputed journals.
The illustrious heritage of the department and its continuous progress in academic excellence over many decades has been duly recognized by the several national agencies. Since its inception, our students have consistently performed well in the University examinations securing top positions. They have been enrolled for higher education in top universities/institutions, in India and abroad. The alumni of the Department have carved their niche in various professional areas such as academics, research, civil services, defence Services, management, research and development and administrative offices across India and abroad. The Department provides a conducive environment for wholesome growth with inclusivity to all members and looks forward to keeping the legacy alive and thriving.
Our department encourages student-centric, co-curricular activities for students like Power Point presentations, quizzes, competitions, poster presentations, exhibitions, seminars, workshops, invited lectures, and demonstrations of physics experiments, etc., are also conducted in the department every year to boost their confidence. The department has organized several national and international seminars. The department has a physical society which organizes various academic tour to visit renowned research laboratories and industries every year to help in personality development, research skills and leadership qualities of students.
The faculty of the department has also been contributing immensely to the administrative work of the college, with many actively participating in university examinations, NAAC accreditation processes, the development and updation of the college website, management of online admission portal, and serving as co-ordinators and members for various college cells/committees. The students of the department have also made their mark in the social life of the college, with active contributions and leading positions in various college societies and programs being organized every year. History of the Department
The department has a glorious history over a span of six decades. The Physics Department was founded in 1962 under the headship of Dr. Surendra Kumar Handa. He continued to lead the department until 1992. Dr. Handa started a two-year M.Sc. program in physics in 1965.
Dr. S. K. Mishra took over as head of the department in 1992 and served until 2007, along with the position of principal of D.B.S. College from 2003 to 2007. Dr. Mishra significantly enhanced the better educational environment and research activities.
Dr. S. K. Saxena, who chaired the department from 2008 to 2009. During his tenure, the NAAC inspection was initiated, where he effectively communicated to the NAAC inspection team about available facilities, syllabus, research and progress made by the department.
Dr. S.K. Srivastava served as our principal from 2007 to 2009. He has enhanced the college's infrastructure, renovated it to comply with NAAC standards, and formed various committees for the NAAC inspection in 2008.In his tenure, NAAC inspection of the college was completed. Dr. Srivastava also served the department as head from 2009 to 2010.
Presently, Prof. Pragya Agarwal has been the head of the department since 2010 and continues to lead the department. She strengthened the existing infrastructure of teaching and research. Under her headship, the department has hosted many national and international seminars, conferences and workshops. Prof. Agarwal has successfully implemented the National Education Policy 2020 in the department. Under her guidance, various departmental committees of faculty members of the department have been functioning effectively. Committees meet periodically to discuss and solve academic issues related to the syllabus, examinations, internal assessment, library, laboratory, etc. She has also set up a physical society in the department for students to get involved in academic activities.
