The Department of Zoology at D. B. S. College, Kanpur is one of the leading departments in the sciences. The department provides quality education to students irrespective of their caste, creed and religion. Besides conducting classes in classical subjects like Non-chordate and Chordate Zoology. The department also offers an array of branches like Reproductive and Developmental Biology, Animal Physiology and Biochemistry, Biosystematics and Evolutionary Biology, Biotechnology and Genetic Counselling, Molecular Biology, Immunology and Bioinformatics, Ethology, Biodiversity and Wildlife Conservation. The department also facilitates the basic and comprehensive approach towards developing skills in the two specializations – Ichthyology & Applied ichthyology and Entomology & Applied Entomology. The department has three well-equipped laboratories for conducting B.Sc. and M.Sc. practical classes which provide a suitable environment for understanding. Apart from this there is a separate Physiology Laboratory and Environmental Research laboratories to promote research-based activities and hands-on training to students. The department is proud to have a beautiful and well-maintained museum which is an integral part of teaching and contains an extensive range of specimens that covers the whole animal kingdom including Non-Chordates and Chordates. It also contains Complete skulls, articulated skeletons and Disarticulated skeletons of many animals, large numbers of slides from Histology, Developmental biology and whole mount organisms of different phyla and stuffed specimens.

The department has highly qualified, experienced and dedicated faculty members. At present, there are Nine faculty members in the department and Prof. Indrani Dubey is the Prof-In-charge. Other faculty members are Prof. Sandeep Shukla, Prof. Abhinav, Dr. J. P. Srivastava, Dr. Alok Kumar Srivastava, Dr. Anupam Dubey, Dr. Manju Bhaskar, Dr. Madhuri Yadav and Mr. Shyam Narayan Mishra. More than fifty students have been awarded the prestigious degree of Doctor of Philosophy under the guidance of Dr. U. K. Pandey, Dr. G. D. Mishra, Dr. S. N. Khattri, Dr. N. D. Dwivedi and Dr. B. S. Chandel. Presently students can pursue research under the guidance of Prof. Indrani Dubey, Prof. Sandeep Shukla, Dr. J. P. Srivastava, Dr. Anupam Dubey, Dr. Manju Bhaskar & Dr. Madhuri Yadav. Many Major and Minor research projects funded by UGC, DST, CSIR, U. P. Higher Education and CSJM University, Kanpur have been completed. At present one Major Project (Principal Investigator- Prof. Indrani Dubey and Co-Investigator- Dr. Manju Bhaskar) is funded by Higher Education Uttar Pradesh and two Minor Projects (Project one - Principal Investigator – Dr. Manju Bhaskar and Project two Principal Investigator – Dr. Anupam Dubey) funded C. V. Raman Minor Research Project Scheme C. S. J. M. University Kanpur are going on. Many research papers have been published in reputed National and International Journals by faculty members.

The department proudly felicitates Garima Sengar (2010), Kritika Mehrotra (2018), and Shweta Kushwaha (2019) for receiving the Chancellor’s Gold Medal for securing the highest marks in the M. Sc. Zoology C. S. J. M. University, Kanpur annual examination. Shweta Kushwaha also qualified CSIR NET-JRF in 2019 and pursuing PhD from the Department of Biological Sciences and Bioengineering at IIT Kanpur. Nandita Mishra also qualified CSIR NET in 2023 and pursuing PhD from the Centre of Biomedical Research Lucknow.

The department organizes excursion trips to reputed laboratories at the Indian Institute of Pulses Research, Kanpur, Chandra Shekhar Azad University of Agriculture & Technology Kanpur & India Institute of Technology Kanpur, Indian Agricultural Research Institute New Delhi, National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources Lucknow to motivate and encourage students to pursue their degrees at graduation and post-graduation level. The department also organizes Seminars, Workshops and various competitions at College and Intercollege level to motivate the students to strive for excellence and empower them to be at par with the current world.

History of the Department

The Zoology Department was established in the year 1964 under the guidance of Shri. Shriram Srivastava as an undergraduate Department. Later Shri R.S. Shandilya joined as the Head of the Department in the year 1966. Under his leadership Zoology Department was upgraded to Postgraduate department in the year 1969 .

Dr. U.K. Pandey and Dr. B.S. Chandel completed their advanced research work and were awarded D.Sc. degree from (former) Kanpur University. In the year 2007-2008 under the direction from  then secretary board of management Dr. Nagendra Swarup ji and during the headship of Dr. S.C. Srivastava Zoology Department was provided with two research labs, one Museum, and one rich postgraduate library. In the same year both the labs of M.Sc. and three B.Sc. labs were also upgraded.

Zoology department had organized many national seminars ,workshops, and quizzes in various years .Many students have completed their research work and were awarded their Ph.D. Degrees.
