History of College
The D. B. S. College is located in the south part of the city Kanpur. After the tragic partition after independence this part of the city became a rehabilitation centre for the displaced population. The great visionary Late Dr. Virendra Swarup, with the view of imparting education to the large influx of refugees, laid down the foundation of this college. D. B. S. College started its normal functioning in the year 1959 with the mission of imparting quality and value based education to boys and girls students without discriminating caste, creed and class of the society. The institution started with only 78 students and 7 teachers.
The college expanded in the mid sixties with the opening of post graduate faculties in science subjects – Physics, Chemistry, Zoology, Botany and Mathematics. Class rooms and laboratories were constructed to accommodate increasing number of students. At present the college has the status of being one among the biggest and leading institution affiliated with C. S. J. M. University, Kanpur. It is a grant-in-aid institution and is recognized by the UGC under 2 (f) and 12 (b) since the year 1970. Initially it was affiliated to Agra University and later on with the establishment of Kanpur University (C. S. J. M. University) the college automatically got affiliated with C. S. J. M. University, Kanpur.
At present the college is functioning both in aided and self finance modes. The college has to its credit success in sports, games, NSS, NCC and also providing employment opportunities to students in addition to academic schedule. Keeping pace with changing times and observing the changing composition of the students the college has been constantly and consistently upgrading its motives and objectives. The college has a campus with the area 8.25 acres and having its own vast playground than any other college of the University. It provides the opportunity for inter-colleges and inter-university games of international standard.
At present the college has 148 permanent and temporary teaching staff. The majority of teachers are Ph. D. degree holders and are actively involved in research activities in addition to their regular teaching assignments. The college has non–teaching and technical staff. The unit cost of education of the college is Rs. 6136 including salary and Rs. 2340 excluding salary. At present the college has almost fully computerized and well rich library for U. G. students. In addition to this every P. G. department has its own departmental library. The college library is well furnished with a common study hall for students. The library is equipped with the DELNET and INFLIBNET facilities which connects our library to various national and international libraries. We plan to computerize the functioning of the library fully till next session and cataloguing and listing of books have been computerized.
The different departments of the college are regularly organizing national and international seminars time to time. This provides a via media to students as well as to teachers for a close interaction with faculty of other institutions. Beside the seminars, debates, symposia and guest lectures are also held every year. This facilitate the students their general knowledge and up gradation of the subject. The college runs with other activities such as regular Alumni Meet, Teachers – Parents Meet, Students Grievance Redressal Cell, Sports Meet etc. Because about seventy percent strength of the students of this college belong to the surrounding rural areas and they need a special attention. The college provide them opportunities to upgrade their communication skill. The college through the effective functioning of its Employment Cell takes care of such students. More than hundred students have been selected for various jobs via campus interviews organized by the Employment Cell.
