One Day Workshop on Intellectual Property Rights

On 06 March 2025, D. B. S. College, Kanpur, in collaboration with Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University, Kanpur and Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj Innovation Foundation (CSJMIF), organized a one-day workshop on ‘Intellectual Property Rights (IPR)’. The primary objective of the workshop was to create awareness among faculty members, and budding entrepreneurs about the importance of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) in innovation, research, and entrepreneurship.

The workshop aimed to:

  • Enhance understanding of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) among faculty members.
  • Promote knowledge regarding patents, copyrights, trademarks, and geographical indications.
  • Encourage innovative thinking and entrepreneurship among students.
  • Provide insights into how Intellectual Property can act as a catalyst in the knowledge-based economy.

            

The workshop commenced  with a warm welcome address by Prof. Indrani Dubey, one of the conveners of the workshop. He emphasised the importance of Intellectual Property Rights in safeguarding the creations of innovators and entrepreneurs. He also expressed his gratitude towards the Principal, Prof. Anil Kumar Mishra, and the IQAC Coordinator, Prof. K. K. Srivastava, for supporting and facilitating the organisation of this workshop.

Following the welcome address, Prof. Anil Kumar Mishra delivered an inaugural speech highlighting the increasing need for Intellectual Property protection in the fields of education, research, and innovation. He mentioned how Intellectual Property Rights can significantly contribute to the economic growth of a country by protecting the interests of innovators.

The keynote session was conducted by Dr. Divyansh Shukla, Assistant Dean, who is a recognised expert in Intellectual Property Rights and Innovation Management. In his comprehensive and impactful session, he covered the following major points:

  1. Introduction to Intellectual Property Rights (IPR): He explained the concept of Intellectual Property Rights, including patents, copyrights, trademarks, and geographical indications.
  2. Importance of IPR in Research and Innovation: Dr. Shukla emphasized how Intellectual Property protection encourages innovation by giving exclusive rights to inventors and creators.
  3. Patent Filing Process: He elaborated on the step-by-step process of filing patents and the legal framework for protecting inventions in India.
  4. Start-ups and Entrepreneurship: Dr. Shukla inspired students by demonstrating how Intellectual Property can play a vital role in fostering start-ups and promoting entrepreneurial activities.
  5. Global Perspective of IPR: He discussed international treaties and agreements that protect Intellectual Property Rights on a global platform.

His session was highly engaging, and he responded to various queries raised by the participants regarding patent filing, innovation protection, and entrepreneurship. The second major highlight of the event was the address by Mr. Anil Kumar Tripathi, Innovation Officer. He discussed the practical application of IPR in academic research, product development, and start-ups. He also shared some practical examples of successful entrepreneurs who utilised Intellectual Property protection to scale their businesses.

Mr. Tripathi motivated the students to engage in innovative thinking, conduct research, and contribute to nation-building through entrepreneurship. He also shed light on the support and funding provided by CSJM Innovation Foundation to promote student-led innovations and start-ups. The workshop concluded with an interactive session, where students and faculty members raised their doubts and questions regarding Intellectual Property Rights, patent filing procedures, and innovation protection. Both Dr. Divyansh Shukla and Mr. Anil Kumar Tripathi actively answered the queries, encouraging students to come up with innovative ideas and seek protection under the Intellectual Property framework.

The event concluded with a formal vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Anupam Dubey, one of the conveners of the workshop. He expressed heartfelt gratitude to:

  • Principal Dr. Anil Kumar Mishra for his continuous support and guidance.
  • Keynote Speaker Dr. Divyansh Shukla for his knowledgeable and insightful session.
  • Guest Speaker Mr. Anil Kumar Tripathi for inspiring students with practical examples and real-world knowledge.
  • IQAC Coordinator Prof. K.K. Srivastava for ensuring the smooth execution of the event.

Dr. Dubey also thanked all the participants for their participation and encouraged them to actively pursue research and innovative projects with a clear understanding of Intellectual Property Rights.

The workshop proved to be highly impact in:

  1. Raising awareness about Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) among students and faculty members.
  2. Encouraging innovation and research work in various fields.
  3. Providing practical knowledge about patent filing, copyrights, trademarks, and design rights.
  4. Promoting entrepreneurship among students by emphasising the role of IPR in start-ups and business ventures.

The event concluded on a positive note, leaving the participants motivated and well-informed about Intellectual Property Rights. The college administration expressed its intent to organise more such workshops in the future to promote innovation, entrepreneurship, and research among students. The event successfully ended with the promise of creating a dynamic innovation ecosystem at D. B. S. College, Kanpur.
